Growing a Calathea Ornata Houseplant

Its elegant appearance is reminiscent of an artist’s brushstrokes, adding an air of sophistication to any interior setting. Whether you’re a seasoned plant collector or a newcomer to the world of indoor gardening, the Zebra Plant’s captivating aesthetics make it an irresistible choice.

Beyond its visual appeal, the Calathea Ornata is renowned for its interactive nature. As daylight fades, the plant’s leaves gently fold together, creating an enchanting rustling sound. This dynamic behavior, known as nyctinasty, adds an element of surprise and engagement, making the Zebra Plant a delightful conversation starter and a source of wonder for curious minds.

Caring for the Calathea Ornata is a gratifying experience, especially when you witness its lush growth and vibrant appearance. It thrives in well-lit, indirect light, making it an excellent choice for spaces with filtered sunlight. Keeping the soil consistently moist without overwatering is key to its well-being. Using distilled water or allowing tap water to sit overnight before use prevents mineral buildup, which can harm the plant’s sensitive root system.

How to Care for Calathea Beauty Star Houseplant

Calathea Ornata plants thrive in humid environments and prefer indirect lighting, and will grow best in a dim room.

• Place your Calathea Beauty Star plants away from open windows with direct sunlight.
• Provide ample humidity. Preferably, place your zebra plant near a humidifier or place your potted plant on top of a saucer filled with pebbles.
• Keep your Calathea Beauty Star soil moist but never overwater or let the plant sit in water.
• Feed your plant monthly in the spring, summer, and fall. Use a balanced plant food diluted to ½ the recommended strength.
• Don’t fertilize your Calathea Beauty Star if the plant is not growing.
• Calathea plants enjoys the warmth, preferably between 65°-80°F (18.3°-26.7°C), and do not like temperatures below 55°-60°F (12.8°-15.6°C).

Common Calathea Houseplant Problems

Calatheas are sensitive to water.

Water of poor quality, soft water, or fluoridated water causes the leaves to turn brown. The best way to water a Zebra plant is to use distilled or rainwater. If you are using tap water, allow it to sit out overnight before using it.

• Like many tropical indoor plants, the Calathea Beauty Star prefers a humid spot. Brown edges indicate the air is too dry. Mist the leaves twice per week with room temperature water; take care not to mist them directly on the top of the leaves.
• Mist your Calathea from the bottom up; higher overall humidity is preferred over misting.
• Hot temperatures cause the leaves to curl.
• It is not a good idea to report newly acquired plants as they are already struggling to adapt to their new environment. It can take several months for plants to adapt.

When repotting, it’s best to keep the rootball of your Calathea Beauty Star plant intact.

• If the roots don’t hold the soil in place, then it is not recommended to be repotted. The new pot should have draining holes and only one size larger.
• Add an extra perlite potting mix to the bottom of the pot, around the sides, but never on top of the original rootball. After repotting, the plant will go longer than before between waterings, so the watering routine has to be adjusted accordingly.
